Borah represented Idaho in the Senate for 33 years, 1907-40, helped it become the nation's largest timber and silver producer, became chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee 1924, proposed disarmament conference 1920, defended civil liberties during the Red Scare and urged recognition of Soviet Union.
