Note Includes bibliographical references and index. "From 1942 to 1943, these highly trained volunteers fought seven critical battles in the Solomon Islands--with names like Tulagi, Tasimboko, the Matanikau River and the Dragon's Peninsula. They were desperate, bloody affairs fought against some of the most experienced jungle fighters in the Japanese empire. Twenty-four Raiders fought with such valor that they had ships named in their honor, all but one posthumously. Joseph Alexander provides an abundance of first-person accounts from Edson to such hard-nosed NCOs as Angus Goss, Walter Burak, and Anthony Palonis. His portrayal of the Raiders' defense of Guadalcanal's Henderson Field along an elevation known ever since as Edson's Ridge, shows why that three-day conflict became an indisputable touchstone of Marine Corps history."

Berthon, Simon. Allies at War: The Bitter Rivalry Among Churchill, Roosevelt, and De Gaulle. London : HarperCollins, 2001. 345 p., [8] p. of plates : col. ill., ports. ; 24 cm. Note TV tie-in "Berthon's narrative accompanies his forthcoming PBS telecast about Charles de Gaulle's struggles once France fell to the Nazis in 1940 to play the modern Joan of Arc. Aged 49 and a one-star general for only three weeks, he had flown to London five days before Paris was surrendered. Legally, Marshal Petain's collaborationist regime at Vichy represented France, but de Gaulle almost singlehandedly established the exile "Free French" to continue the war from England and some of the colonies. In Berthon's view, de Gaulle had four enemies: Germany, Vichy, a skeptical Churchill and a hostile Roosevelt. This hostility, fed by at best half-truths from Roosevelt's rightist links to Petain ambassador Admiral Leahy, State Department adviser Charles Murphy and Secretary of State Cordell Hull more than by Churchill, shackled and even undermined de Gaulle. In Berthon's opinion, Churchill equivocated, and U.S. players were villainous. Though he makes little of de Gaulle's postwar promotion of the myth of mass French resistance to fascism, his wartime de Gaulle is convincingly heroic. None of the three leaders comes off well which may give the book a controversial edge."

Burleigh is a professor of history at Washington and Lee University who wrote Death and Deliverance (1994). "While the basic structure utilized here is narrative history, Burleigh consistently enriches his narrative with passionate and moving examples of the price paid by ordinary people caught up in the ravages of totalitarianism. He avoids the trap of viewing the Nazi revolution as an "aberration" or "distortion." Rather, Burleigh places the Third Reich within the broader context of the spiritual and moral crisis that plagued Europe at the beginning of the twentieth century. It was that spiritual void and sense of moral chaos that made totalitarian movements, with their pseudo-religions and claims to moral certainty, so appealing to many among the European elites."

New York: Cambridge University Press, 1994. 382 p. : ill. ; 24 cm Note Includes bibliographical references (p. 343-372) and index. "Burleigh demonstrates how Nazi eugenics perverted German medicine and science: Scientists approved the sterilization of some 400,000 people between 1934 and 1945 to eradicate ``degenerative heredity'' in order to ``improve the race.'' Doctors, particularly psychiatrists, were encouraged to falsify medical records, give lethal injections, starve patients, and use other creative means of murder while ignoring the age-old dictum of the physician, ``Do no harm.'' Burleigh also details how asylum populations were decimated as managers, bureaucrats, lawyers, doctors, nurses, and other professionals, corrupted by monetary awards and promotions, played their parts in the Nazi murder industry. Daily killings became routine as Nazi propagandists extolled social Darwinism. Burleigh describes how victims were targeted, including Jews, foreigners, enemies of the Reich, gypsies, and those who lacked ``labor values.'' Occasional accounts of humanity brighten the grim story, as medical Schindlers saved patients from death by listing them as valuable workers who were badly needed. After the war, some of the Nazi eugenicists, tried at Nuremberg and in German courts, were executed, while others received light sentences. Most melted into the general population under new identities."

Dew, Stephen Herman. The Queen City at War: Charlotte, North Carolina During World War II 1939-1945. University Press of America, 2001. 336 p. "The Queen City at War reveals a complexity of experience on the Charlotte home front, and it supports much of the current research that exposes the myth behind the 'Good War' concept. The story of Charlotte during World War II is a 'tale of two cities': -- for some, 'it was the best of times,' but for others, 'it was the worst of times.'"

The young candidates had been enlisted in the V-12 officers procurement program and called to active duty from colleges and universities across the country. Ninety percent of the class, who called themselves the "SOCS 400," wound up as platoon leaders on Iwo and Okinawa. Wilford, Timothy. Pearl Harbor Redefined: USN Radio Intelligence in 1941. Rowman & Littlefield, 2001. 154 p "This book redefines the Pearl Harbor controversy through a study of radio intelligence as practiced by the United States Navy (USN) in 1941. Newly released primary documents, supported by secondary historical and technical accounts, explain the effectiveness of USN radio intelligence in terms of its principal activities in 1941: cryptanalysis, traffic analysis and intelligence reporting. This evidence also demonstrates the extent to which the USN exchanged intelligence with its Allied counterparts. USN radio intelligence penetrated the vast expanses of the Pacific, permitting the partial reading of Japanese naval messages and the tracking of Japanese vessels. In the period preceding the Pearl Harbor attack, radio intelligence provided the USN with foreknowledge of Japan's operations in the North Pacific, although Washington failed to provide its Hawaiian commanders with adequate forewarning. Washington's response can now only be explained in terms of gross neglect or careful design, rather than complete surprise."
