5/28/97 - Summer courses offered by the History Department are HIST 153/246 History of Spain MTWR 16:00-19:15 June 2-20 by Dr. Iris Engstrand; HIST 191/291 South African Dilemma MTWRF 13:00-15:40 June 2-20 by Dr. James Gump; HIST 162/261 Religious and Social Upheaval in Latin America MTWR 18:00-21:15 August 4-22 by Dr. Kenneth Serbin.

1/3/97 - Building Communities: The Pardee Construction Company and Its Founding Family, by Dr. Iris Engstrand was published in a limited edition Dec. 23, 1996, by the Pardee Construction Company (ISBN 0-9655707-0-3). Dr. Engstrand used the family papers and archives of the Pardee Company to write a narrative illustrated with 192 photographs. The book describes the history of one of California's most influential families, from the 1852 arrival of George Thayer Pardee in Amador County, to the founding of the construction company in 1921, the expansion after World War II in Pacific Palisades and Las Vegas, and developments in San Diego County from Mira Mesa to North City West in the 1970's and 1980's. The book concludes with an appendix listing the 200 communities and subdivisions built by the company in 75 years. Dr. Engstrand will be travelling in Spain in January with her daughter Kristin. Dr. Elizabeth Cobbs finished her history of the Peace Corps during her recent sabbatical and has sent the manuscript, "All You Need Is Love," to Harvard University Press. Dr. James Gump and Dr. Molly McClain attended the annual meeting of the American Historical Association in New York Dec. 27 to Dec. 30. Dr. Steven Schoenherr's paper "New Tools of the Trade: Using Multimedia in the History Classroom" has been reprinted in the new issue (Vol 5 No 1) of the journal Computers in the Social Studies. Dr. Schoenherr was also faculty advisor for the first CD-ROM Master's Thesis to be completed at the University of San Diego, "The Ryan Fireball" by A.J. Lutz, an interactive history of the first Navy jet airplane using photographs, movies, and documents from the San Diego Aerospace Museum. An unprecedented 19 student web projects were completed in the fall semester, including 17 undergrad class projects and 2 graduate projects (Andrew Carlstrom's Chancellorsville and Shawn Hanley's Queen for a Day). As the History Department starts its third year on the Internet, it's World Wide Web server is publishing 450 text pages and 2500 photographs.
