Indianapolis preacher James Warren Jones founded the People's Temple cult in 1955, moved to California in 1965 and to Guyana in 1977. When relatives complained of brainwashing, California Congressman Leo Ryan visited the town Nov. 14, 1978, but on Nov. 18 was killed boarding his plane to leave. That same day, Jones ordered his 912 followers to drink Kool-Aid laced with cyanide, and himself committed suicide with a shot to the head. < - >
