THE INCIDENT AT SUBCAMP BUDY

The town of Budy is located about 4Km away from Auschwitz. Because of the Nazi's practice of deportation, the town was uninhabited. The schoolhouse and another building had been turned into housing for the women who were sent there to work in the fields. these women didn't pose much of a threat, which allowed for very little security; simply a barbed wire fence, there wasn't even any lighting to keep an eye on the women at night. The camp consisted of German prisoners and former prostitutes, Jewish , Ukrainian, and Polish women. There were a total of 300-400 prisoners at Budy. On October 6, 1942 a few people were informed that there had been a revolt at Budy. What could have happened?

When the investigators arrived they were faced with a horrible sight. Behind the school the ground was covered with the dead and dying mutilated bodies of the women, who were covered in tons of flies. It turns out that the SS guards at Budy encouraged the Germans to mistreat the Jews (surprise -surprise). Sometimes the SS even played with the Jewish women asking them to run through the guards who would then shoot at them for pure sport. The evening of October 5 a German woman thought she saw a Jewish woman holding a rock as she returned to her bunk, the German was a prostitute and told her lover (who was the guard on duty), that the woman had hit her. All of the guards then entered and began beating the Jewish women, some they threw down stairs, and some out the window. The woman who started it all stayed upstairs with her lover the whole time. The women were then taken downstairs and outside, the guards beat them all with clubs and guns and began to shoot people, one woman even began to chop people up with an axe. Those who tried to escape the fight were also killed, maybe to destroy all witnesses. Höss was informed around 5 am, when he arrived a few injured women came out of hiding, thinking they'd be safe. As soon as he left they were all killed. Only one copy of each picture taken was printed and the negatives were all destroyed. Eventually all of the women who survived the attack were taken to Auschwitz and killed with Phenol injections to the heart. The SS guards were reprimanded, and the SS was never allowed to enter the Budy camp again.
