LIBERATION PICTURES

Liberation came to Auschwitz during the cold winter January 27, 1945. The Soviet Army was the first to enter the campgrounds. All that was left of the prisoners were the weak , sick, and dying. All the prisoners healthy enough to walk were marched out of the camp to other camps, Buchenwald, Dachau, and Sachsenhausen. even though the majority of prisoners were evacuated about 8,650 prisoners remained in the Auschwitz complex. Those who survived were sent to Switzerland and other countries to recover from the effects of malnutrition and their wounds and sicknesses. Many of these survivors had to come to terms with the fact that they had lost not only everything, and their homes, but the majority had also lost all of their families. With nowhere to go the Jews were sent to an internment camp at Cyprus. When the Palestinian state was formed many went to Israel to try to start over.
