THE TUSKEGEE INSTITUTE

Headquarters at Tuskegee Institute, Alabama From: Double V: the Civil Rights Struggle of the Tuskegee Airmen

The Tuskegee Institute is located in Macon County with very dry weather. It was a traditional school with conservative values regarding their coed students. Strict curfews were established for ladies, which limited the opportunity for the men to come in contact with them. Many of the black pilots would have to go off base for entertainment. But once they reached town, they would be watched like a hawk. If they sped or even jaywalked, they would be caught and reprimanded. If they wanted to travel farther out of town, they would receive segregated and inhospitable conditions. They were not allowed to travel first class or coach in the 'white' train cars even if they were empty. But the officers "should have been protected by federal law governing interstate travel" (Scott and Womack 163). After this was reported, some railroad companies were obligated to change their standards.
