Mission Beach Developers
There were several people that were responsible for the beginnings of Mission Beach
and San Diego. Among these was the great John Diedrich Spreckels who had a
grand vision of paradise. However, it didn't only include Mission Beach.
Spreckels was born on August 16, 1853 in South Carolina and didn't arrive in
San Diego until 1887 from Hawaii. When he arrived in San Diego, it wasn't
much more than a small town. He helped bring about many changes that lead to
it's success today. 2101
One of the most important things that Spreckels did was to help develop
a railroad in San Diego. This made transportantion in the area easier which
was very important. He also helped build up the city's water supply because
of its terrible droughts. He is known as "The Man who made San Diego." He
frequently stayed at the Hotel Del Cornado and really like the atmosphere
there. In fact, he probably liked it so much that he had his own plans for
Mission Beach. The Hotel Del was made by E.S. Babcock and opened on Feburary
1, 1888, about the same time as a huge population boom. Spreckles continued
to have a huge part in history of San Diego until his death on une 7, 1926.

Prior & Church are the developers of the "Giant Dipper Roller
Coaster." But, that is not their only development. At the time, they
were one of the country's most popular builders, constructing roller
coasters in many places along the coast. "Giant Dipper" is one of their last
remaining structures still standing today. 2103
Another great developer is J. M. Asher. Even though he didn't have the
great influence in San Diego as Spreckles did, he contributed quite a bit to
Mission Beach. His influences came about after the death of Spreckles.
Things that he brought to Mission Beach inlcude the street car and "Tent
City." For this, he is known as the "Father of Mission Beach." 2104
George L. Barney also has a little influence in San Diego. He was also a
big-time developer like Spreckles although not quite as well known. One of
the most important facts about Barney is that he was Spreckles partner in
the investment of Mission Beach. 2105
Other people of MIssion Beach are also important. Many of these
people were involved with the Misson Beach Amuesment Center. T. H.
Eslich was the Engineer for Luna Park. Ed Kickham built a roller rink there.
Among Lincoln Rogers and Frank Stevenson's developments around the country
was "The Plunge," in Mission Beach. The picture to the left is that of the
restored "Plunge" in the way it looks today. William D. Evans was the one
who had a lease on the Roller Coaster before the City aquired it. There is
also a paddle wheel boat owned by the Bahia Hotel that bears his name. All
these people made Mission Beach the place it is today. 2106
