Physical Fitness

California public schools are required to annually administer the Physical Fitness Test, called the Fitnessgram, in grades five, seven and nine.

The test assesses six major fitness areas, including aerobic capacity (cardiovascular endurance), body composition (percentage of body fat), abdominal strength and endurance, trunk strength and flexibility, upper body strength and endurance, and overall flexibility.

The goal of the California physical fitness test is for students to achieve a score in the healthy fitness zone for all six fitness areas of the test. We will be training for the fitness test on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so be sure to wear comfortable running shoes and clothes on those days.

Please note: Training for the “official” testing days is not limited to our two conditioning sessions each week. We would encourage you and your child to fit physical fitness and healthy lifestyle activities into your schedules whenever you can! The more physically fit the kids are, the easier, more fun and rewarding all physical activities will be for them.

Hey Kids -- Are you ready to run across America?!

What's that you say? "No way can I do that -- that's just WAY too far?!" Well, not if we work together. All we need you to do is run just one mile per day. We’ll keep track of our mileage and at the end of each week, we’ll add everyone’s mileage together and plot it on our map. You will be challenging another class to see who can be the first to run from the east coast to the west coast and "Run America!" Oh, and by the way...there are going to be some U.S. history questions you'll have to answer along the way!

The Rules:

  1. 1.Try to run one mile each day.

  2. 2.Collect and plot weekly mileage on the classroom map.

  3. 3.When we reach a marker on the map, the class must come up with the correct answer to the corresponding history question. You must answer the question correctly to continue along the route.

  4. 4.We will start at Plymouth Harbor, MA and continue running until our collective mileage puts us at Sutter’s Mill in CA.

  5. 5.Try running as a family, and have fun!
