Literary Devices

This year students will be learning about the author's craft of literary devices. They will be asked to come up with their own literary device each week and create a book when they are finished. Below are examples of the literary device of the week. Instructions can also be found under class resources. Students MUST use the paper given to them to earn a full grade on the assignments.

Hats will be made together in class. All that is expected is that you make your best attempt to look colonial. You will receive a participation grade for the day. Boys may be able to re-use parts of their Explorer costumes. Girls should look for a long, full skirt or a dress of plain color, print, or stripes (sometimes relatives or friends have something you can borrow).

On colonial day, bring your lunch in a basket or wrapped in cloth for a picnic in the spirit of the 1700’s.

The sun is in the sky and parade season is near. It is time for you to prepare and get ready for the annual State Shoebox Parade. To do so, your job is to make a state float out of a shoebox. Use your creativity and create a state float that will wow the judges. Anything is possible; just make sure to follow the rules below:

Make a float representing the state you studied this year.

Decorate your float with items or pictures of things associated with your state.

Must include on your float:

o State name

o State flag and flower

o A string or rope attached to your float so you can pull it.

Optional – you can add wheels to your float for better transportation if you want.

o NO remote control cars or battery operated devices.
