- Nina, Martin Pinzon's Pinta, Santa Maria (lost Dec. 25)
- left Palos Aug. 3, 34 days to Canaries
- 36 days from Canaries to Bahamas
- landfall Oct. 12 after 70 days, 3000 miles
- took 6 Tainos - failed to find gold on Cuba
- met Guacanagari on Hispaniola - built La Navidad
- Pinzon found gold in Cibao & rejoins Columbus
- Cape Flechas - "they would have fear of Christians"
- 1493 Santangel letter - also P. Martyr wrote account
- Papal Bull - Line of Demarcation (until Tordesillas)
2. To Hispaniola Sep. 25,1493 to June 11, 1496
- 17 ships, 1500 men, livestock to Lesser Antilles
- rescued Tainos from Caribs on Guadeloupe
- found La Navidad destroyed by Caonabo Nov. 28
- Columbus and Ojeda lead massacre at Vega Real
- built Isabela 1494, but moved to Santo Domingo 1496
- discovered Puerto Rico, Jamaica, "peninsula" of Cuba
- burned Taino zemis, collected tribute
- sent to Spain 500 slaves (later freed), gold, tobacco
3. To Venezuela May 30, 1498 to Nov. 25, 1500
- 6 ships to Trinidad & "mighty continent" of Paria
- believes "Spanish Main" & Orinoco to be "Paradise"
- sends to Spain new maps & 1st pearls
- voyages of Ojeda, Nino, Pinzon, de Lepe, Cabral
- revolts of Roldan & Moxica - the repartimiento begins
- Bobadilla sends Columbus to Spain in chains
4. To Central America May 11, 1502 to Nov. 7, 1504
- 4 ships to Cuba, Jamaica, Honduras, Panama
- ignored Mayan canoe - looking for passage to Indies
- shipwrecked 1 year in Jamaica
