The first high school, the "Academy," was located on 16th Street from 1883 to 1923. National City High School, "Old Central," was located at 9th and E from 1908 to 1954, designed at Frank Kimball's request to resemble the San Luis Rey Mission. The Sweetwater School District was formed in 1920 and dedicated the Sweetwater High School in 1922 at Highland and 29th Street.
