- San Diego Natural History Museum in Balboa Park has a Research Library with 92,000 volumes, 5000 maps, 1100 watercolors of southern California wildflowers and 66 watercolors of birds commissioned by Ellen Browning Scripps at the beginning of the 20th Century. - Command Museum of the Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego is located in Building 26 in front of Gate 4 just off Pacific Highway. Contact person: Barbara S. McCurtis
- San Diego Maritime Museum on Harbor Drive near Ash Street maintains the historic ships Star of India, Berkeley and Medea.
- San Diego Aerospace Museum in Balboa Park has a collection of 56 restored aircraft including examples important in the history of Pacific naval aviation. Its N. Paul Whittier Aviation Library and Archives has 20,000 books, 250 periodicals, over 1 million photos, manuscripts, reports, letters and memoranda relating to aviation history.
- Orange Country Marine Institute in Dana Point Harbor - has restored a full-size replica of the Pilgrim that took Richard Henry Dana to California in 1834 and since 1981 has provided a "national award winning Living History experience to over 16,000 youngsters a year." The Institute operates the 70-foot research vessel, R/V Sea Explorer. See animations of its planned $20 million expansion.
- Nautical Heritage Society - a non-profit organization founded in 1982 "for the purpose of educating citizens about the importance of the coastal marine environment to our quality of life." It manages the Californian, a full-scale re-creation of the 1848-vintage Revenue Marine Service Cutter, C.W. Lawrence, one of the fastest and grandest ships in the evolution of the United States Revenue Marine Service, and the first to be assigned to the California coast. The Californian was built at Spanish Landing in San Diego, California, and launched in May 1984.
