Residents of Mission Beach
Who lives in Mission Beach? Who would want to live in Mission Beach?
The first residents of Mission Beach were those in the Tent City.
The picture to the right is that of an advertisement for the Tent
City. However, the are grew rather quite quickly. Living at the beach became
very popular. On top of that, around the 1930's, Mission Beach had a very
appealing image for parents. They had the concept that Mission Beach as a
place "Where it is healthful!" It was a "where there is environment and
safety for children." The place has changed since then. 2401
The local residents then started to form a small, tight-knit
community. Local clubs started to be formed such as the Mission
Beach Women's Club. The Mission Bay Yacht Club was also founded in 1927 by
members of the prominent Scripps family. The trolley that went down Mission
Beach Boulevard also made community to La Jolla and downtown very easy. The
picture to the left is one of the times when one of the clubs of Mission
Beach had their meeting. 2402
When Mission Bay was finally completed, the value of lots on the bay
side became comparable to those on the ocean side. Even during the
depression, there was still growth in Mission Beach with more people going
the good life on the beach. Rentals were the most popular because of the
high real estate value of most of the houses. 2403
Today, there are more than 5,800 residents living in Mission
Beach today. There are only 119 acres of land set aside for all these
residents. The reason for this is because of the strict regulations on
buildings. The city wants to keep Mission Beach as the developers first
intended. Among other restrictions, there are also height restrictions. The
real estate in the area is quite high now. It is one of the most expensive
places to live in San Diego. The picture to the right is that of the
boardwalk with a the row of houses behind it. Living next to such a public
walk is the price for living on the beach. 2404
The one problem of living at the beach is all the
destruction. Many of the houses that are constructed get
destroyed by storms. These pictures are of houses which got destroyed after
storms came by. The boardwalk also suffers. But, people love living at
Mission Beach and so they rebuilt and try again. A little water never hurt
anyone. 2405
The one problem with living on the beach is all the bad
weather. Sure, most of the time San Diego has great, sunny
weather. However, this year, we had this annoying winter season called El
Niņo. Nothing was destroyed at Mission Beach, however, cloudy days like the
ones in these pictures were common. The ocean took away a large portion of
the sand. So now, the water comes very close to the boardwalk. However, many
people now say that all the bad weather is over. So, hopefully, there won't
be any more raining on Mission Beach. 2406
