12/6/2002 - Phi Alpha Theta held its Fall meeting and initiation of new members into the national history honor society Friday evening in the University Center.

11/12/2002 - Dr. Iris Engstrand presented the first annual Author E. and Marjorie Hughes Lecture, titled "The University of San Diego: Renaissance Roots and Modern Realities" in the Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice Theatre.

10/4/2002 - Dr. Kevin Starr, State Librarian of California, pictured here with Dr. Iris Engstrand, gave the Keynote Address at "Celebrating Books" the 500,000 Volume Induction Ceremony, USD School of Law, Katherine M. and George M. Pardee, Jr. Legal Research Center, October 4, 2002.

9/11/2002 - September 11 Remembered

8/19/2002 - Dr. Molly McClain has returned from a summer NEH Institute on "Space and Society in the Past" at Penn State, and her visit to the Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville, PA. Dr. Steven Schoenherr has returned from his travels in Canada and New England for conferences on World War II at Sienna College and on early silent film technology in Montreal. Dr. Iris Engstrand became the History Department's most distinguished grandmother yesterday morning when her daughter Kristin Moran (Assistant Professor, Department of Communication Studies) gave birth to a baby girl, Madison Blaise Moran.

5/31/2002 - The latest web statistics for the History server show 24 million hits since the January move to the MacIntosh G4 OS X server and gigabit ethernet router in the Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice.

5/10/2002 - Phi Alpha Theta held its Spring meeting and initiation of new members into the national history honor society Friday afternoon in the Kroc Center courtyard.

12/7/2001 - Phi Alpha Theta held its annual banquet in the University Center on Friday December 7, 2001, and initiated twelve new members into the national history honor society.

5/5/2001 - Yale University Press published Beaufort: The Duke and his Duchess, 1657-1715 by Molly McClain. The book is available from amazon.com

5/4/2001 - Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society held its annual banquet outside the History Department offices on Friday afternoon and Dr. Engstrand took some digital pictures.

4/22/2001 - Dr. Iris Engstrand celebrated the publication of her latest book, The San Diego Yacht Club, A History 1885-2000, at Opening Day of the San Diego Yacht Club on April 22, 2001 at which time the mayor received a copy of Dr. Engstrand's book.

1/23/2001 - Welcome to the start of the Spring 2001 semester. If your history class has a web page, be sure to check the announcements and on-line syllabus for the first day of class.

2/12/2000 - Phi Alpha Theta and the History Department is sponsoring a field trip to the San Diego Historical Society Archives in Balboa Park on Saturday morning, Feb. 12. Meet at the main entrance at 9 am. (use 1649 El Prado, 92138-1825 for Yahoo map)

1/30/2000 - Dr. Iris Engstrand travelled to Brazil in January and took some digital pictures around Rio de Janeiro.

11/30/99 - Wayne Donaldson, architect and current MA student, will speak to Phi Alpha Theta on the "Interpretation of Historical Sites: Rancho Los Cerritos and Leo Carrillo Rancho" on Tuesday, Nov. 30, 5 p.m.-6:30 p.m. in UC 107.

11/11/99 - Phi Alpha Theta is sponsoring a movie night on Thurs. Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. in UC 107. The film to be shown is Stalin starring Robert Duvall. Soda and popcorn provided!

10/21/99 - A new book Inspired by Nature: The San Diego Natural History Museum After 125 Years by Iris Engstrand and Anne Bullard has been published; see museum announcement. The book signing and slide presentation was held at the dinner Oct. 21 commemorating the 125th anniversary of the Museum; see pictures.

10/15/99 - The History Department Open House on the Trailer Annex porch was held this afternoon for faculty and staff and students. In the picture below, Dr. Molly McClain, Provost Dr. Frank Lazarus, Dr. Iris Engstrand, and Vice President for University Relations John McNamara officially dedicate the honorary "Lazarus Hall."
